Item 1:

Announcement of the  21st Annual Conference

Melbourne

September 26-28, 1997

        The 21st Annual Conference of the Australian Society for Biophysics
will be held at the University of Melbourne, from Friday September 26 to
Sunday September 28, 1997.

        The meeting will precede the Australian Society of Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology Conference (September 29-October 2) and will run
concurrently with the Australian Electrophoresis Conference (September
26-27).  The 3rd Australian Molecular Modelling Workshop will be held
immediately before the ASB Conference and a joint session is planned on
Friday, September 26.

        The scientific program will include the following topics

*       Biomolecular structure  *       Membranes &
        & recognition                   biosensors
*       Molecular modelling     *       Plant biophysics
*       Muscle biophysics       *       Ion channels

        There will be ample opportunity for contributed oral and poster
presentations.  The Young Biophysicist Award will be made, there will be a
prize for the best student presentation (oral or poster), and student
travel assistance will be available.

Item 2.
ASB International Conference: "Molecular Interactions of Actin"

There will be a joint meeting of the ASB with the US Biophysical Society
and the Japanese Biophysical Society. It is scheduled for April 1-5 1997 in
Maui, Hawaii. Full details of this meeting are on the ASB website listed
above.

The last Newsletter for 1996 will contrain a report of the FASTS Council
meeting late last month.
