Format of the meeting
The meeting will be held over 5 days with sessions in the mornings and
afternoons with two evening sessions in lieu of afternoon sessions. Plenary
and invited lectures will be in the morning.
The meeting represents the fourth five-yearly meeting devoted to actin.
The first meeting was in Sydney, the second in Milan and the third in Troy,
NY. The major themes of the sessions will include:
-
Actin-myosin interaction with an emphasis on the molecular details of their
interaction loci and changes induced by myosin binding
-
Regulation of actin-myosin interaction by tropomyosin-troponin
-
The influence of actin-binding proteins on the assembly of actin filaments
-
The structure of actin filaments
-
Molecular dynamics of actin including actin assembly
-
Molecular genetics of actin expression
-
Single molecule "physiology"

FUNDING
Fund-raising is going well, and our goal is to subsidise the expenses of
all attendees, especially those junior investigators who do not yet have
independent funding. However, we anticipate that a significant portion
of the expenses will have to be borne by all attendees, including invited
speakers.
ACCOMMODATION
We recommend that you arrive on Maui on March 31 as the conference will
commence at 8:30 am on April 1 in the Maui Sheraton Hotel.
The conference venue was chosen because of its central location to the
three organizing countries. The new Maui Sheraton will open in March 1997
and has been fully renovated at a cost of $20 million. It is a luxury hotel
right on Kaanapali Beach and it is the headquarters hotel for the conference.
A number of rooms has been reserved at a $624.25/person/5 nights minimum
of two. This price includes taxes and porterage). Children up to 16 years
in the room are free. This rate represents a large reduction on the standard
rates at this hotel and reservations can not be guaranteed after the first
week in December. Maximum number of persons per room is four. The hotel
is located about three miles from the nearby town of La Haina. A map of
the island and the hotels can be viewed on the ASB web site.
A limited number of rooms is available at the Maui Islander. Two rates
are available. $242.35/person/5 days for a minimum of two persons or $148.00/person/5
days for a minimum of four persons (including taxes and porterage). Both
accommodation rates include a kitchenette. The Islander is located in the
town of La Haina and is 3 miles from the conference site. It is a combination
of hotel room, kitchenette-uni type facility with swimming pool but no
other major amenities. It probably requires a car rental.

will need a round trip airfare, Honolulu-Kapalua-Honolulu @ $150. This
airport is 4 miles from the Sheraton Hotel and the round trip Airport Transfer
@ $10 one way minimum of two persons. The straight one-way taxi fare is
$12.00
If your flight from LAX or SFO goes directly to Maui you will land
at Kahului Airport which is 40 miles from the hotel. The round trip airport
